Aqaba Container Terminal Receives Most Coveted Award In Dubai

Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT) received several international accolades at two prestigious award ceremonies that took place in Dubai on 28 November and 4 December, thus placing Aqaba at the fore front of the maritime excellence in the busiest hub of the region.

The two awards ceremonies were attended by close to 600 experts and leaders from the Maritime Industry, including leading global shipping lines, ports and terminals operators, tankers, shipyards, maritime insurance, maritime training centers and port authorities.

At Lloyd’s List South Asia, Middle East & Africa Award ceremony, ACT’s operational excellence was underlined repeatedly by the independent panel of maritime experts who nominated the Jordanian container terminal as finalist for three most coveted awards: the Port Operator Award, the Safety Award and the Hutchinson Environment Award.

Few days later, ACT received the Most Sustainable Port Development Award from the panel of judges of the Transport Arabia Excellence Awards. At the ceremony, ACT has been highly commended for its regional leadership in the field of operational reliability, safety and security and for its exceptional efforts to constantly promoting environmental conservation.

ACT is the only terminal in the Middle East to hold the prestigious EcoPort label, providing Jordanian exporters with yet another selling point for promoting their cargo. ACT also boasts an ISO 14001:2015 certification, along with an exemplary safety record, with zero fatalities and a lost time injury frequency rate of 1.34 per million man hours – down from 1.65 per million in 2016. The company provides extensive health and safety training to all of its employees and contractors.

Always looking ahead, ACT has demonstrated they are ever-ready to serve the wider Levant Region. ACT has the capacity, the infrastructure and the resources to support the Jordanian export industry, as demonstrated since the Syrian border closure, and to serve the historical Iraq and Syria import markets which are expected to experience a strong growth when the reconstruction will start. Taking advantage of Aqaba’s natural deep waters and ACT’s consistent strong operational performance, all major global Shipping Lines call the Jordanian terminal today on a weekly basis with large vessels, thus connecting the Levant to the World.

Commenting on the occasion of the Lloyd’s List Awards, ACT CEO Steven Yoogalingam said, “We are humbled by the recognition of our peers of the maritime industry. It is true that ACT, operated by APM Terminals, has been performing remarkably well thanks to the hard work of all its employees. At a time of uncertainty in the region, Jordan remains a beacon of stability which is of pivotal importance for the Terminal to perform as the preferred gateway to the Levant.”

Tarek Tabbaa, esteemed member of the Board of Directors of Amman Chamber of Commerce, praised ACT’s achievements, noting that these nominations demonstrate the successful outcomes and benefits of public-private partnerships in the country, and Jordan’s ability to nurture such partnerships.

Meanwhile, the CEO of the Aqaba Development Corporation (ADC), Ghassan Ghanem, said, “We at ADC are very proud to stand beside ACT on this occasion. ACT’s achievements are helping to further position Aqaba as the most sustainable cargo gateway to the Levant region, and demonstrate the excellent business environment that the Kingdom offers to the local, regional and international investors.”
